About The Author / Illustrator

Tina Field Howe spent her childhood in Waverly, NY, a quiet little village close to the northern border of Pennsylvania. There was lots of countryside where she grew up, and she spent a lot of time in the fields and woods near her house, examining creatures, climbing trees, racing along well-worn paths, and sometimes "helping" her mom, dad and grandmother with the gardening. Nature has always been a part of her life, so it is no surprise that this story takes place at the entrance to a garden.

As a child, Tina had many favorite books and loved being read to. She remembers the day she "got" reading, with her mother's loving assistance. She has been an avid reader ever since and has been writing poetry and stories of all types since her twenties.

Tina enjoyed reading to her son until he himself became a reader. It was during that time that she became inspired to write children's stories. Many writers have inspired her, too many to list. She found that there's one thing that all great children's book creators have in common: what they write or what they draw comes from their own truth. There are no formulas and you can not fool children!

Though she has been creative in various media all her life, she became serious about illustration in the 1990s. She has published in several books and other media. Snailsworth, a slow little story, is her first children's writing and illustration endeavor. Tina thinks that creating children's books may be her destiny!

Tina holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Anthropology and a minor in Art (nearly a double major, however!) from State University of New York at Brockport .  She has been involved in graphic design, very heavily in digital media, since 1990. She also earned a Certificate from Writer's Digest School in Fiction Writing.

A member of SCWBI (Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators) and The Arts of the Southern Finger Lakes, Tina has been earning a living as a freelance communications designer since 1995. She creates everything from web graphics, logos and photo images to business communications, documentation, signage and scripts; writes stories and screenplays; and designs and builds commissioned stained glass windows. You can visit her main web site and her online store at CafePress (where SnailStuff is also available) to view samples of her other work.

Tina is also listed in the Directory of Illustration #22.

Acknowledgements
There are many who have supported me (or put up with me) in my goal of producing this book, web site, and associated pieces. I thank Matthew, my son, for his infinite patience while I hogged the PC; my family, whom I coerced into reading my manuscript - more than once; and to friends who encouraged me along the way. Without them, I would not have gotten as far as I have. I would also like to express thanks to one of my most helpful friends, Ted Sharack of
DayOne Marketing, for his expertise in helping me work out web design glitches and smooth my biographical material (it's so difficult to write about oneself).
